We are looking for a passionate clinical leader that has the skills to be able to lead clinical colleagues across Wales in challenge led innovation. Working with business and academia to develop innovative technology solutions to real world health problems and challenges.

You will need to combine your clinical expertise and your enthusiasm to deliver change in health driving forward the Contracts for Innovation agenda.

This is a secondment which will be for one session per week until 31/07/2027. There is a possibility of contract extension dependant on successful funding. Secondments will require support of your current Line Manager.

Main duties of the job

As part of the Senior Team in the Health Board, the Chief Medical Innovation Lead (CMIL) communicates, interprets and translates clinician and patient/citizen needs and in turn improves clinicians’ and patients’ understanding of Innovations and manages their expectations of potential solutions (Digital or non-digital). The CMIL therefore supports the development of a clinically-orientated Strategy for the Contracts for Innovation Cymru. They also contribute to and inform Informatics elements of the Health Boards Integrated Medium Term Plan (IMTP) and the Informatics Operational plan.

The CMIL will be well versed with strategic direction and will work with a variety of stakeholders to ensure that the benefits available through high levels of clinical engagement are achieved. The post holder will manage conflicting views on priorities and preferences and will be the voice of the clinician and will support clinical understanding and alignment with Welsh Government Strategy and NHS Wales Plans.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities

To provide clinical leadership to the development of the Contracts for Innovation Cymru Strategy and ensure that the local strategy’s align with and fully supports the Digital Health and Care Strategy for Wales and the Health Board’s own service and digital Strategy. Ensuring that the principles of prudent healthcare are at the forefront of service planning and delivery, with a strong emphasis on Quality Improvement (“always Improving”).

To establish a constructive working relationship with the Contracts for Innovation Cymru Team and the Informatics Clinical Management Team on all clinically related matters relating to challenge led innovation.

To work closely with the Head of Challenge Led Innovation and the Senior Management team to map the transition of innovations and the Centre developing strategies and tactics to support clinicians changing their working practice to gain all the quality and benefits to patient care

The CMIL will represent the Health Board and the Contracts for Innovation Cymru on Clinical Councils and Project Boards across Wales and may be asked to act as Senior Responsible Officer (SRO) for projects and programmes as appropriate. To develop and chair formal Contracts for Innovation Cymru Clinical Innovation Network that will be the forum which is used as the voice of the clinician.

  • Track record of facilitating change to improve services in clinical practice.

Innovation passion and enthusiasm

Essential Criteria

  • Demonstrable experience of working positively with senior clinicians to achieve improvement to services.
