Role Purpose
To support the mental health, wellbeing, and safety of Academy players in line with the Scottish FA Child Wellbeing and Protection Standards. The role promotes a positive, child-centred environment where young people feel respected, listened to, and supported both on and off the pitch.
Reports to: Head of Youth Academy and Child Wellbeing and Protection officerKey ResponsibilitiesWellbeing & Mental Health Support
· Provide a consistent, approachable point of contact for players needing emotional or pastoral support.
· Carry out informal wellbeing check-ins and identify early signs of distress, confidence issues, stress, or anxiety.
· Promote a safe, inclusive culture where players feel comfortable talking about mental health.
Child Wellbeing & Protection
· Act in accordance with Scottish FA Child Wellbeing & Protection Policies, ensuring all children’s rights, dignity, and safety are prioritised.
· Recognise and report concerns promptly to the Club’s Child Wellbeing & Protection Officer.
· Maintain secure, confidential records of wellbeing concerns or support provided.
Education & Positive Development
· Support delivery of wellbeing education (e.g., resilience, emotional regulation, online safety).
· Encourage positive behaviour, healthy communication, and supportive team culture.
Player Transitions & Injury Support
· Provide pastoral support during key transition points, including injury periods, squad movement, or deselection.
· Help injured players feel included and supported throughout rehabilitation (non-clinical role).
Family & Staff Engagement
· Build positive relationships with parents/carers to support player wellbeing.
· Work collaboratively with coaches and staff to embed wellbeing and protection principles across the Academy.
Person SpecificationEssential
· Child Wellbeing in Scottish Football qualification
· Empathy, strong communication, and the ability to build trust with young people.
· Understanding of mental health and wellbeing needs in youth sport.
· Commitment to safeguarding and child-centred practice.
· Awareness of professional boundaries and confidentiality.
Desirable
· Managing Child Wellbeing certificate
· Experience in youth work, wellbeing, education, or pastoral support.
· Mental Health First Aid or similar training.
· Knowledge of the Scottish FA Child Wellbeing & Protection Framework.
Time Commitment
5-10 hours per week, including selected training sessions, occasional matchdays, and mandatory child protection training.
