Data Platform Engineer

About the Role

Pertemps is looking for a Data Platform Engineer to join our technology team in Meriden. This role is central to managing, optimising, and evolving our data estate across SQL Server, Azure, and the Power Platform.

You’ll be responsible for ensuring our databases and data services are secure, performant, and resilient, while also building out data pipelines and integrations to support reporting, analytics, and business-critical applications. You will also help implement data governance and quality frameworks, ensuring our data is trusted, compliant, and ready to support modernisation and future AI initiatives.

This is a hands-on role in a fast-paced environment, suited to someone who can bridge classic database administration with modern data engineering and governance.

Key Responsibilities

• Administer and optimise SQL Server and Azure SQL databases.
• Implement and maintain HA/DR, backups, monitoring, and capacity planning for mission-critical systems.
• Ensure compliance with security, GDPR, and ISO 27001 standards.
• Design, build, and maintain data pipelines using Azure Data Factory, Synapse, and Logic Apps.
• Integrate data between business systems.
• Collaborate with BI and reporting teams to prepare data for Power BI and analytics.
• Implement data governance and quality frameworks, including metadata, lineage, and retention policies.
• Support event-driven integrations with Azure Service Bus and Event Grid.
• Monitor and optimise data platform performance using Azure Monitor and Application Insights.
• Contribute to DevOps pipelines for database and data solutions (Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions).
• Collaborate with developers, application support, compliance, and BI teams to ensure data availability, quality, and consistency.
• Document runbooks, standards, and processes to support operational excellence.
• Stay current with Microsoft’s data platform roadmap (e.g. Fabric, Synapse Link) and recommend improvements.

Skills & ExperienceEssential:

• Strong experience administering SQL Server and/or Azure SQL.
• Knowledge of database optimisation, indexing, and query tuning.
• Hands-on experience with Azure data services (Data Factory, Synapse, Logic Apps).
• Experience with data integration and pipelines across multiple systems.
• Familiarity with Power BI datasets and data modelling.
• Understanding of data security, GDPR, and compliance frameworks.
• Experience with automation and DevOps tooling (Azure DevOps, Git, CI/CD).
• Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work in a fast-paced environment.

Desirable:

• Experience with data governance platforms such as Microsoft Purview.
• Exposure to Azure Fabric or Synapse Link.
• Familiarity with event-driven architectures (Service Bus, Event Grid, Kafka).
• Experience with Application Insights and data workload monitoring.
• Knowledge of cloud cost optimisation and FinOps.
• Understanding of modern data architecture patterns (data mesh, microservices).
• Exposure to preparing pipelines for AI/ML workloads.
