About the role
Task Fronterra Geoscience are seeking an accomplished Senior Sedimentologist with deep expertise in depositional systems and reservoir characterization to join our geoscience consultancy. This role is focused on delivering advanced sedimentological analysis and research-driven insights to support Energy sector exploration, appraisal, and development. The successful candidate will apply cutting-edge sedimentological techniques to improve subsurface understanding, reservoir prediction, and risk reduction, while also mentoring junior staff and contributing to the consultancy’s technical reputation.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and deliver detailed sedimentological studies, including facies analysis and depositional system reconstruction.
- Interpret and integrate borehole image logs, wells logs, core, cuttings, and other data sets such as seismic data, to develop depositional models and predict reservoir architecture.
- Conduct advanced reservoir quality assessments, including diagenesis, porosity-permeability relationships, and heterogeneity analysis.
- Undertake core logging, thin section petrography, and laboratory-based sedimentological studies.
- Develop and apply stratigraphic frameworks to support understanding of reservoir architecture, correlation and regional basin studies.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams (geophysics, reservoir engineering, petrophysics) to deliver integrated consultancy solutions.
- Author and deliver high-quality technical reports, publications, and knowledge-sharing materials.
- Mentor and guide junior sedimentologists and geoscientists, supporting knowledge transfer and skill development.
- Contribute to innovation through new methodologies, workflow development, and participation in industry conferences or publications.
- Stay at the forefront of sedimentological research, digital tools, and their application to petroleum systems and subsurface energy projects (e.g. geothermal and CO₂ storage etc.).
Qualifications/skillsRequired:
- Master’s degree in Geology, Sedimentology, or related discipline (PhD strongly preferred).
- 10–15+ years of experience in applied sedimentology within the Petroleum and Energy industry, research institutes, or consultancies.
- Recognized expertise in clastic and/or carbonate depositional systems and their reservoir implications.
- Strong background in sequence stratigraphy, facies modeling, and core-based analysis.
- Proven experience in core-based analysis and facies modelling.
- Strong understanding of reservoir heterogeneity, diagenesis, and reservoir quality prediction.
- Experience preparing and delivering high-quality technical consultancy reports and presentations.
- Demonstrated ability to lead studies, review deliverables, and mentor junior staff.
Preferred Skills
- Experience in multiple sedimentary environments such as deepwater, fluvial-deltaic, or carbonate systems etc. and in different parts of the world0
- Direct experience of undertaking core logging and petrographic analysis would be beneficial.
- Field experience with sedimentary basin analogues and reservoir analogue outcrops.
- Exposure to a variety of Energy Industry areas such as Petroleum, CCS, Geothermal or other subsurface energy transition projects.
- Track record of peer-reviewed publications or recognized industry contributions.
- Proven ability to undertake business development activities.
