Job Summary An opportunity has arisen for a Band 2 Maternity Care Assistant to join the maternity team at the University Hospital Birmingham (UHB) trust. The vacancy offers band 3 development once relevant competencies have been achieved. We are looking for enthusiastic and passionate individuals, with good communication skills to support women and their families. The primary role of the Maternity Care Assistant is to support and work in collaboration with midwives and the wider multidisciplinary team, to provide safe and holistic approach to care. Main Duties, Tasks & Skills Required This post is rotational, and the employee will be provided with appropriate training for the clinical setting in which they are working. The post holder is expected to undertake specific training to achieve defined competencies for the role. The role entails specific clinical tasks including maternal observations, carbon monoxide screening, offering basic support, advice and referring to the smoking cessation services, obtaining urine samples, urinalysis, obtain microbiological samples, theatre runner. At university hospitals Birmingham (UHB) we are one of the largest maternity units within the west Midlands, delivering care for over 8400 births a year over 3 sites, Heartlands, Good Hope and Solihull. - Evidence of Maths/English qualifications at Level 2 or above.
- Vocational qualification at level 2 or equivalent relevant experience.
- Level 2 examples: GCSE Grades 9-4 (A-C) Level 2 Diploma in health care support / NVQ, Functional Skills Level 2.
- Internationally educated applicants will have to evidence UK ENIC (the UK National Information Centre) Statements of compatibility.
Desirable
- Care Certificate or can demonstrate prior skills, knowledge and experience that meet the 15 minimum standards described by Health Education England (HEE) Skills for Health
Experience Essential
- Experience of working / participating as part of a team as an employee / volunteer.
- Ability to demonstrate/ articulate an understanding of the role and tasks involved and can describe the physical and emotional aspects of the role and some duties.
- Can link the Trust values (Kind, Bold, Connected) to the role and provide examples from personal experience which demonstrate understanding in relation to the role.
- Can explain why training / education and approaches to care need to be consistent in relation to safety and patient experience.
Desirable
- Has experience of working in a person centred / facing role in a paid or voluntary capacity.
- Understanding of the principles of safeguarding in relation to this role
- Awareness of the National Health Education England (HEE) Maternity Support Worker Competency, Education and Career Development Framework
Additional Criteria Essential
- Good standard of spoken and written English
- Effective communication skills -- written and oral
- Basic computer skills
- Ability to work with competing priorities/ can demonstrate an understanding of workload and how to prioritise.
- Good organisational skills
- Ability to demonstrate numeracy skills associated with the role i.e.: record volume of fluids/ drinks.
- Ability to demonstrate literacy skills associated with the role i.e.: understanding of written information/ instructions/ duties including policy and procedures.
- Undertake course work practical, theoretical, and written associated with skills / competencies aligned to the role.
- Flexible approach to shift patterns and place of work this may include working in different practice settings in various locations dependent upon service need
