A Royal Initiative to Spark Nursing Careers
A programme supported by King Charles III and managed by the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) has enabled young individuals at Basildon Hospital to explore nursing as a potential career path.
Seven cadets, aged 16 to 17 from the Essex Army Cadet Force, participated in the RCN King’s Nursing Cadets programme. They spent a day at the hospital engaging in interactive talks and practical sessions to gain genuine insights into the nursing profession.

This initiative was facilitated by the Professional and Commissioned Education team at Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust. Notably, Basildon Hospital is the only hospital in Essex actively involved in this programme.
Jennifer Marshall, Deputy Director of Nursing at the Trust, emphasized: "This reflects our commitment to building stronger community links as part of the Trust’s 10-year strategy. We aim to provide cadets with a clear view of healthcare work, help develop their real-world skills, and inspire them to pursue careers in the NHS."
One cadet, Olga Reyes, aged 16 from Colchester, shared: "I joined because I'm deeply interested in healthcare as a future profession. Today was fantastic—I loved learning about the various career opportunities and how these roles positively impact patients."
Another participant, Ethan Blanch, also 16 and from Colchester, added: "The simulation suite was incredible; practicing medical procedures like cannula insertion was my highlight. This experience has solidified my desire to pursue a career in anaesthesia."
Backed by HM King Charles III, this national effort focuses on preparing cadets for lifelong success and guiding them toward employment in nursing.
Upon completing the programme, students receive a certificate, module transcript, and a special alumni pin. They can also become ambassadors and join the RCN cadet alumni network, accessing local and national events, talks, and future job opportunities.
Jack Parry, Project Coordinator for RCN King’s Nursing Cadets, who accompanied the cadets, stated: "Our programme brings the nursing profession to life for aspiring nurses. Collaborations with employers like Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust are vital, adding real-life experience to academic learning and offering young people a comprehensive understanding of healthcare work."
