Premier League Futures: A Unique Opportunity for Academy Players
As part of the Premier League Futures programme, 12 current and former Academy players embarked on a transformative four-day journey at Nike’s global headquarters in Beaverton, Oregon. This experience was designed to expose them to potential career pathways beyond their playing days.
The initiative aligns with the Premier League No Room For Racism Action Plan, aimed at enhancing career opportunities for under-represented groups in football. David Rainford, the Head of Education and Academy Player Care for the Premier League, emphasized the importance of such programmes in preparing young players for life after football.
Programme Details
Premier League Futures is a year-long development programme for Academy players aged 18-24 in both men's and women's football. It focuses on:
- Personal and professional development
- Career planning and broadening opportunities
- Leadership and personal growth
- Promoting inclusivity and diversity
During their visit to Beaverton, participants enjoyed an exclusive campus tour, fitness sessions, and workshops that provided insights into product innovation and marketing at Nike, showcasing a behind-the-scenes look at one of the world’s leading sports brands.
Player Testimonials
Participants Tarik Gidaree and Alex Wollerton shared their experiences:
- Gidaree remarked on learning about the various roles within Nike, stating, "We have been learning about the many and numerous roles Nike have within the company."
- Wollerton highlighted the support from both his former club, Leeds United, and the Premier League, which has provided him with excellent platforms for his career transition.
Zoe Walters, another participant, stressed the importance of planning for life after football: "It is really important because I think football isn’t forever, and we need to think about what we are going to do afterwards."
Commitment to Diversity
The Premier League is dedicated to diversifying the workforce in football, with a recent update on its No Room For Racism Action Plan showing progress in this area. So far, Premier League Futures has supported 35 players, with 20% of the League's workforce now from ethnically diverse backgrounds. Additionally, the Professional Player to Coach Scheme aids former players from diverse backgrounds who aspire to coach.
With initiatives like these, the Premier League continues to reinforce its commitment to reducing discrimination and promoting diversity across the sport.
