A Significant Investment in Women's Future in AI

The Department for Education has made a remarkable investment of £8.2 million aimed at encouraging girls to pursue advanced maths and related subjects, which are crucial for careers in Artificial Intelligence (AI).

This funding initiative is part of the government’s Plan for Change, designed to support 7,500 girls from 400 disadvantaged secondary schools. It focuses on improving participation and teaching in advanced maths, equipping young women with the essential skills needed for the jobs of tomorrow.

Currently, girls represent only one-third of A-level maths students, and women account for just 22% of the AI workforce in fields like software engineering and data science.

Sheila Flavell CBE, COO of FDM Group, emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “AI is creating new possibilities for the workforce, opening up new roles in software engineering and data analytics. It’s great to see the government investing in foundational skills in this area.”

Bridging the Gender Gap

Flavell further commented, “AI has the potential to bridge the gender gap in technology. Investment in equal training opportunities is crucial to close the divide and build a cohort of inspiring female AI experts.”

This funding is part of the updated Advanced Maths Support Programme, which includes pilot teacher training and student enrichment courses set to begin in September. The investment aligns with the government's AI Action Plan, aiming to create a robust talent pipeline and foster diversity within the AI sector.

Ongoing Improvements in Education

The government is also reviewing the 5-18 education system to enhance digital education and ensure students acquire the necessary AI skills in line with technological advancements. Education Minister Bridget Phillipson remarked, “Today’s brightest maths minds are tomorrow’s AI pioneers, and this government is opening the door for those who have been left behind in the AI revolution.”

Through this initiative, the government aims to break down barriers to opportunity, supporting young people and accelerating growth in the AI sector, ensuring that the next generation can thrive in exciting future careers.
