National Careers Week: Transforming Lives Beyond the Pitch
During National Careers Week (2–7 March), the English Football League (EFL) showcases how clubs are making a real difference in their communities, extending their impact far beyond the football field.
Millwall Employability Hub: Empowering the Local Community
In south London, the Millwall Community Trust runs the Millwall Employability Hub, a free program offering Employability and Information, Advice & Guidance (IAG) support to unemployed individuals of all ages and backgrounds. Participants benefit from:
- One-to-one mentoring
- Weekly pre-employability Bootcamps
- Industry workshops and job fairs
- Recruitment events
- Access to training and education
This initiative is designed to build confidence, develop skills, and create pathways into work, helping people overcome barriers to employment.
Lisa Nti's Journey: From Struggle to Success
Lisa Nti, a graduate, faced challenges breaking into the competitive marketing sector due to a lack of experience. Referred to the Hub by her Jobcentre Plus coach in Peckham, she started by attending a CV workshop, where she gained valuable insights into what employers look for in applications.
Following this, Lisa had a one-to-one session with Employability Mentor John Scarborough, where she expressed her ambition to pursue a career in marketing and social media. Recognising her potential, John connected her with Kai Bennett, Media Officer at Millwall Community Trust, leading to a work shadowing opportunity in the media team.

Since then, Lisa has been working closely with Kai, developing her media skills and gaining hands-on industry experience. She now contributes to matchday coverage for the Millwall Lionesses, strengthening her portfolio and building the practical experience she previously lacked.
Voices from the Program
Lisa shared: "After graduating, I struggled to find employment in marketing due to a lack of experience. When I was told about the opportunity at Millwall Community Trust, I was pleased — it’s exactly the kind of experience employers are looking for."
Kai Bennett praised her progress: "Lisa is a pleasure to work with. I’ve seen clear improvement in her work and look forward to continuing our collaboration."
Ophelie Zahui, Employability Mentor at the Trust, added: "Lisa has shown great dedication since joining the Trust. It’s been a joy to watch her grow."
Genevieve Campbell, Lisa’s Jobcentre Plus coach, said: "Lisa is tenacious and committed. Despite setbacks, she’s embraced every opportunity to pursue her goal. I believe she has the acumen and work ethic to succeed."
This story underscores the impact of tailored employability support and how community programmes can help individuals overcome barriers and achieve their career ambitions.
