A Day of Discovery at Weston College

Year One pupils from Mead Vale Primary School in Weston-super-Mare had an exciting experience at Weston College with a hands-on careers workshop focused on construction.

The Puffin Class visited the South West Skills Campus (SWSC), where they were introduced to the world of construction through engaging activities led by Richard Hanney, Head of Construction, and Victoria Howell, Deputy Head of Construction. The workshop began with a unique session called "construction phonics", linking literacy to construction themes.

Hands-On Activities

The pupils participated in a variety of hands-on activities, including:

  • A career in construction session
  • Tool bingo
  • A collaborative tower-building challenge

To conclude their visit, the students enjoyed a guided tour of the SWSC campus, providing them with a behind-the-scenes look at the learning spaces, workshops, and equipment utilized by the college’s construction students.

Inspiration and Future Aspirations

A spokesperson for Weston College commented, "It was a chance for them to see real-life learning in action—and perhaps imagine themselves there in the future." The pupils, donning hard hats and learning a new vocabulary of tools and trades, left feeling inspired and excited about the world of building and design.

A heartfelt thank you was extended to Richard, Victoria, and their team for making the workshop both engaging and educational. The college aims to welcome more young learners in the future, fostering connections and sparking curiosity in the next generation.
