Legal & General to Slash 1,000 Jobs: Inside the UK’s Insurance Giant’s Radical Restructuring

The landscape of the UK insurance and pensions sector is shifting dramatically as Legal & General (L&G) announces a significant workforce reduction. The firm plans to cut 1,000 jobs by mid-2027, representing approximately 10% of its total workforce. This move marks a pivotal moment in the company's ongoing transformation under new leadership.
A Leaner Organization Under New Leadership
António Simões, who took over as CEO from Nigel Wilson in January 2024, is driving this restructuring. He describes the cuts as "the next stage" of creating a leaner organization. With most of L&G’s 10,000 employees based in the UK, the impact will be felt primarily within the British workforce.
The initial phase involves voluntary redundancies, but the company has made it clear that mandatory job cuts may follow if voluntary take-up is insufficient. Notably, the fund management division, which oversees £1.2tn in assets, is excluded from these cuts as it operates under its own separate restructuring plan.
Strategic Shifts and Financial Goals
Simões, formerly of Santander and HSBC, has been aggressively simplifying the business structure since his appointment:
- Consolidation: Reduced the group’s four businesses to three by merging asset management divisions.
- Divestment: Sold non-strategic assets, including housebuilder Cala Homes and legacy real estate.
- Focus on Pensions: Sharpened focus on the booming pensions arm, aiming to capitalize on a market expected to see £500bn of transactions over the next decade.
Additionally, Simões has pledged to return more than £5bn to shareholders between 2025 and 2027 through dividends and share buybacks.
Why Now? Complexity vs. Efficiency
In an email to staff, Simões explained that while progress has been made, decades of accumulated structures have made L&G more complex than necessary.
"We need to change how we work today and, through this, become a leaner organisation," Simões stated.
The goal is to redirect resources toward areas with the strongest opportunities for long-term growth. L&G is currently benefiting from strong auto-enrolment trends, seeing about £1bn of new inflows each month into pension schemes.
Supporting Employees Through Change
An L&G spokesperson emphasized the company's commitment to supporting colleagues throughout the process, including consulting with unions. The aim is to ensure that the transition minimizes disruption while positioning the firm for future success in a evolving pensions market.
