There's a fine line between family banter and a full-on roast, and not everyone seems to know where that line is.
When a woman showed up to a family dinner and spent the next hour being clowned on for her career switch, she decided the only move left was to head for the door.
The Family Dinner That Went Wrong
Everything started off normal at her parents' house, but after a while her cousins and even her uncle started making jokes about her job and how she still hadn't "figured life out yet."
For context, she recently switched careers and took a pay cut to do something she actually enjoys. It's been a bit of a struggle financially, but she's been proud of herself for sticking with it.
At first she laughed it off, but the jokes just kept coming.
When "Jokes" Cross the Line
The comments got meaner and meaner. Things like "maybe you'll get a real job someday" or "don't worry, we'll cover your meal since you're broke." Everyone was laughing — including her parents — which honestly made it worse.
After about an hour of this, she told them she didn't appreciate the comments and asked them to stop. They said she was being too sensitive and that it was "just jokes."
That kind of pushed her over the edge, so she got up, said she was leaving, and walked out.
The Aftermath and Family Backlash
Later, her mom called saying she embarrassed the family and should've just stayed and ignored it. Some relatives have been texting her saying she overreacted and made things awkward.
Now she's wondering if she should've just stayed and dealt with it instead of leaving.
What Reddit Had to Say

This family showed a real lack of maturity. One user pointed out this could all be part of a troubling pattern of behavior.

Another user called it what it really was: bullying disguised as humor.

This family definitely wouldn't like it if the roles were reversed.

Setting boundaries with family is hard enough without the whole table laughing at you while you do it. No one should be forced to tolerate this much disrespect from their own family.
