A Gateway to Career Opportunities

Regional employers had the chance to inspire the next generation of their workforce at the annual Suffolk FutureSkills Fair in Ipswich.

More than 3,000 people attended the event on November 3, hosted for the second consecutive year by Suffolk New College. Organizers hailed it as a great success, and Ipswich MP Jack Abbott described it as an eye-opener for youngsters, revealing the opportunities available locally.

Youngsters from around 50 Suffolk schools engaged with over 70 employers from diverse sectors, including music, zoology, construction, hospitality, and the motor industry. Participants, aged 11 to 14, took part in interactive activities and gained insights into various career paths.

Charlotte Rossiter, the organizer from Suffolk New College, stated, "It was a great day that showcased a variety of industries to young people so that they can look ahead with confidence and excitement in terms of their futures. The community really came together to support us."

Industry Insights and Partnerships

Kamil Khoury, operations director at Norwich-based catering firm Anglian Larder, used the event to connect with the college and provide students a real understanding of the hospitality industry. Warren Salmon from Morgan Sindall emphasized the importance of such events for building a talent pipeline in construction.

Dom Freeman from John Grose Group highlighted the value of exposing young people to the motor industry, while Elliot Murphy from Sizewell C called the event unique for inspiring future careers in nuclear energy. Abi Debrah, an 18-year-old cyber security apprentice, shared how the fair helps youth explore options for university or jobs.

Student Experiences

Faith and Marianne, both 12-year-old students from Stoke High School, expressed how the fair influenced their career decisions. Faith said, "Today has helped me make a decision about my future," and Marianne enjoyed the music zone, aspiring to become a performer.

Overall, the fair successfully bridged the gap between education and employment, fostering excitement and confidence among the youth.
