Stand Out with a Voice Memo
Ex-Google exec Jenny Wood suggests that job seekers can make a lasting impression by sending a voice note to their interviewers on LinkedIn 24 hours prior to the interview. This can make your message stand out amidst the sea of direct messages. Wood emphasizes that she listens to every voice note she receives.
Timing is Key
Before you send a voice note, ensure you have connected with your interviewers. Amanda Augustine, a career expert from TopResume, highlights the importance of timing:
- If your connection request is accepted just minutes before the interview, hold off on sending a voice memo as it may appear overly eager.
- If accepted at least 24 hours before, then it's appropriate to send a brief introduction.
Keep it concise — around 30 to 45 seconds — and express your enthusiasm for the upcoming meeting while inviting them to share any preparations you should make.
A Personal Touch After the Interview
Another effective use of the voice memo tool is to send a thank you note post-interview. This adds a personal touch to your follow-up email, expressing your appreciation for the conversation and highlighting your fit for the role.
Reconnect with Contacts
You can also use this tool to reconnect with stale contacts. According to Phoebe Gavin, be warm and conversational, but keep it under two minutes. Always pair your voice memo with a concise text introduction to summarize the message.
