Scarborough STEM Week: A Gateway to Skill-Based Careers
The 16th edition of Scarborough STEM Week has successfully concluded at Scarborough Spa, marking another milestone in inspiring the next generation. Since its inception, this popular event has attracted over 42,000 students, fueling interest in careers centered on science, design, technology, engineering, and maths (STEM).
This year, more than 3,500 young people aged 7 to 19 from coastal schools and beyond participated. They engaged in a wide array of interactive activities designed to spark curiosity and encourage further STEM learning. These sessions were presented by approximately 40 local, regional, and national employers, along with training and education organizations, providing hands-on experiences that bridge education and real-world applications.
Organized by Scarborough Business Ambassadors, the event received robust support from headline sponsors including McCain Foods, Anglo American, Made Smarter, North Yorkshire Council, KD Recruitment, and Lloyd Dowson. Additional backing came from the North Yorkshire Business and Education Partnership (NYBEP), highlighting strong community and business collaboration.
Awards were a highlight of the week, with a special memorial trophy presented in honor of Vaugn Bulmer, head of coach engineering at Plaxton, commemorating the origins of the engineering week. The event featured captivating moments, such as:
- Radiographer Sarah Hann interacting with UTC students.
- Senior Business Advisor Carey Bilton from North Yorkshire Council meeting Sparky the Robot alongside Richard Barber, Chief Engineer at Drax.
- The Cardio Respiratory Team engaging with a UTC student.
