Please note that this vacancy may be withdrawn at any time should it be filled via the internal redeployment processJob Overview Aneurin Bevan University Health Board is looking for an enthusiastic, motivated Decontamination Technician to join our high‑performing Sterile Services Department at both the Royal Gwent and the Grange University Hospitals. This is a vital role ensuring that reusable medical devices – including surgical instruments and endoscopes – are safely decontaminated, sterilised, and ready for use in patient care. You will be part of a dedicated team providing high‑quality decontamination services across multiple specialties. The hours are 22.5 per week, to be worked 14:00 - 22:00, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Main duties of the job As a Decontamination Technician, You Will
- Disassemble, inspect and reassemble complex reusable medical devices, often under magnification.
- Operate washer/disinfectors, endoscope reprocessors and large-load sterilizers.
- Ensure accurate tracking, traceability and documentation of devices throughout the decontamination cycle.
- Undertake daily equipment checks, conduct validation tests and record required quality control data.
- Support loan equipment processing and manage associated documentation.
- Communicate effectively with theatre and clinical staff, providing updates on processing times and advising on alternatives where necessary.
- Participate in internal audits, external inspections and ongoing service improvement work.
The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply. - Good level of general education with GCSE passes or equivalent
- Basic computer literacy
- NVQ Level 3 in decontamination or equivalent experience to include completion of the internal training MATRIX
- Completion of E-learning programme in decontamination practices principles
Desirable criteria
- Internal auditor’s qualification to ISO 9001 standards.
- ‘Institute of Decontamination Sciences’ Technical Certificate Course.
- ECDL qualification
- Ability to deliver practical work based training and assessment
Experience Essential criteria
- Professional experience of working in and applying a quality management system within a decontamination service.
- Ability to work on own initiative
- Experience of dealing with customers
- To be able to give advice, instruction, monitor staff and initiate first line corrective action
Desirable criteria
- Experience in supervising/managing staff
Aptitude and Abilities Essential criteria
- Effective communicator with teams and customers
- Ability to manage and respond to unplanned events.
- Ability to provide written reports on a regular basis
- The ability to liaise with people at all levels and to work cooperatively
Desirable criteria
- Ability to speak Welsh
- Proven ability of working within a decontamination area.
