300,000 New Work Placements Pledged: A Lifeline for Young People to Build Lasting Careers

The UK government has announced a massive initiative to tackle the youth unemployment crisis by creating 300,000 new work placements over the next three years. Backed by major employers like Manchester and Gatwick airports, these placements span sectors from construction to hospitality, health and social care.
Work and Pensions Secretary Pat McFadden emphasized the importance of real work experience: "Give young people real work experience and the chances of them building a lasting career increase dramatically."
This comes after a report warning of a "lost generation," with the number of 16-24 year olds not in employment, education, or training (NEETs) rising to over a million. Former Labour cabinet minister Alan Milburn, who led the review, noted that lack of work experience is "the single most-cited barrier to work amongst young people."

The placements include Sector-based Work Academy Programmes (SWAPs) – short government-funded programs for jobseekers claiming benefits, offering training, hands-on experience, and a guaranteed job interview.
Mr. McFadden added: "This generation deserves every opportunity to succeed, and this Government is determined to deliver it."
