50 Years on the Tracks: The Unbelievable Journey of a Horse Tram Driver in the Isle of Man

A Lifetime on the Tracks: Peter Cannon's 50-Year Career with the Douglas Bay Horse Tramway

Peter Cannon, a horse tram driver on the Isle of Man's Douglas Bay Horse Tramway, is celebrating an incredible 50 years of service. Starting as a tram conductor at just 17 years old in 1975, what began as a summer job turned into a lifelong passion.

The Heritage of the Horse Tramway

The Douglas Bay Horse Tramway, first launched in 1876, is one of the oldest horse-drawn tram services in the world. Operating along the Manx capital's promenade, it serves as both a public transport and a tourist attraction. Over the years, the service has seen changes, including hiatuses due to refurbishment works and the coronavirus pandemic.

A Career Like No Other

Mr. Cannon reflects on the tramway's bustling past, recalling trams running every two and a half minutes during peak season. "It was seriously busy," he said, comparing it to the island's famous TT week. Despite the changes, his love for the job remains unchanged.

"Most people who have worked here over the years will tell you it's the best job they've ever had," he shared. "It's out in the nice weather, you're dealing with animals, it's a unique thing to do, unbelievably unique. And just good fun."

Looking Ahead

With the tramway approaching its 150th anniversary in 2026, Mr. Cannon looks forward to the celebrations. While he has no immediate plans to retire, he admits he might "have a think" after next year. For now, he continues to enjoy his unbelievably unique career, driving the historic trams along Douglas Promenade.
