A New Beginning in Funeralcare
Married couple Alan and Sue McGarry embarked on a transformative career change during the Covid pandemic, leading them to work together as funeral workers. Alan serves as a funeral director at Co-op Funeralcare in Stafford, while Sue is a funeral arranger at the same location.
The couple's journey began in September 1983, when they first met while working at a local foundry. Their bond grew over the years, culminating in marriage in 2001. After years apart, they found themselves working side by side again, but this time in the funeralcare sector.
After a long career as a self-employed haulier, Alan's profession was affected by the pandemic. Seeking meaningful work during uncertain times, he transitioned to funeralcare, starting at Co-operative Funeralcare Wolstanton.
“Transitioning from being a haulier to working in funeralcare was a huge adjustment but it has been incredibly rewarding,” Alan shared. “It’s a sector I never imagined I’d find myself in, yet I truly enjoy what I do and feel fulfilled knowing I’m making a meaningful contribution to people's lives.”
Inspired by Alan's dedication, Sue, a former borough councillor, decided to follow suit. She applied for a position at Co-op Funeralcare and was soon working alongside Alan at the Stafford branch. Together, they have found a natural progression in their careers.
“We’ve always worked together in some form over the years. It’s just what we’ve always done,” Alan stated. Sue echoed this sentiment, saying, “Working together works for us. We both know we are lucky to see one another regularly.”
Their roles in funeralcare have imparted valuable lessons about the importance of life and empathy. Sue remarked, “Working in this sector has taught us that every moment is precious. Supporting families who have lost their loved ones is an honour that is beyond any comparative position we have ever held.”
As for advice for other couples in the same field, Alan and Sue stress the importance of maintaining professionalism while supporting one another.
“Listen to one another and do not take each other for granted,” Alan advises. “Remain professional at all times but know that personal conversations and cuddles are there when you get home.”
