Anglesey Tidal Energy Project Receives National Recognition
An Anglesey tidal energy project has achieved national acclaim at the Careers Wales awards. The Morlais scheme, managed by Menter Môn, won the Newcomer category at the recent Valued Partners Awards in Cardiff.
This award highlights Morlais's dedication to workforce development and its efforts to educate young people about the significance of tidal energy in combatting climate change.
About the Careers Wales Awards
The Careers Wales Awards celebrate individuals and organizations making exceptional contributions to career development innovation across Wales. The Newcomer Award specifically recognizes organizations that have made a substantial impact in a short time.
A Voice for the Future
On receiving the award, Fiona Parry, the skills and training project officer, expressed her pride: "I joined Morlais just over a year ago, and it’s incredibly rewarding to not only be nominated but to win this award. Collaborating with Careers Wales to engage with young people is a crucial aspect of my role."
Fiona emphasized the importance of visiting schools and inspiring students about potential careers in the tidal energy sector, stating, "We are thrilled to receive this recognition. At Morlais, we have always been about promoting the project locally here on Ynys Môn (Anglesey) and across the region."
Morlais Project Overview
Morlais is recognized as one of the world’s largest consented tidal stream energy projects, aiming to harness tidal power off the coast of Ynys Môn to generate clean electricity. The first turbines are slated for deployment in 2026.
The project is supported by funding from the European Regional Development Fund, the Welsh Government, contributions from the Isle of Anglesey County Council, the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA), and the North Wales Growth Deal.
