Breaking Barriers: How Women Are Thriving in UK Railway Careers
Advice from Railway Professionals for Women
Railway staff members have shared their insights on encouraging women to pursue careers in the industry, featured in the latest episode of London Northwestern Railway’s (LNR) "On the Rails" podcast. This release coincides with National Inclusion Week (15-21 September), a time focused on fostering inclusive workforces.
The rail sector is often perceived as male-dominated, with women comprising less than 20% of the UK rail workforce, and half of those in non-operational roles like marketing, finance, and HR. LNR, along with sister company West Midlands Railway (WMR), is actively working to boost female representation in operational positions. In a positive shift, over 20% of new driver or engineering apprenticeships at LNR and WMR this year were filled by women, exceeding company targets.
Key Insights from Industry Leaders
Kate Taylor, joint project manager for LNR and WMR's new electric Class 730 fleets, emphasized: "I've navigated the gender imbalance by focusing on excellence and not letting being the only woman in the room hold me back. Women can excel in any role, from engineers to directors. It can be daunting, but bravery pays off—demonstrate your abilities and seek mentorship from other female engineers for support."
Adebisi Hassan, customer experience manager at London Euston, added: "Your career progression is in your hands. Work hard, be flexible, and communicate your ambitions. Managers will recognize your strengths and support your growth into new roles."
Amanda Webster-Uz, head of station operations at Network Rail, advised: "Prioritize networking and self-reflection. Explore different areas to find your passion, then discuss your goals with managers to create a personal development plan for advancement."
Throughout National Inclusion Week, LNR will continue to share career stories and advice from women in various roles via social media. The full podcast episode, including interviews with additional experts, is available for streaming and download at www.lnr.uk/podcast.
