Celebrating the Masters of Design: Meet the 2025 ADG Lifetime Achievement Honorees

The Art Directors Guild Awards recognize not only prominent figures like Jack Fisk and Catherine Martin but also the dedicated artists who bring their visions to life across various media. The 2025 Lifetime Achievement Honorees include Lisa Frazza, Barbara Mesney, Dan Sweetman, and J. Dennis Washington, each with remarkable careers in the industry.
Lisa Frazza, Scenic Artist
Frazza has an impressive resume, having worked on shows such as “Wheel of Fortune,” “Jeopardy,” and “The Price is Right.” During her 30 years at CBS Studios, she painted designs according to production designers' visions, custom-mixed colors, and led teams to create stunning visual elements. She recalls how the industry has shifted towards digital creations, particularly in game shows.
Barbara Mesney, Set Designer
With 60 feature films under her belt, including “Argo” and “Gone Girl,” Mesney highlights the often-overlooked role of set designers in film and television. Her work is crucial for creating immersive environments that go unnoticed but are essential to storytelling. Mesney shares her experience working on “Basic Instinct” and “Twin Peaks,” emphasizing the collaborative nature of set design.
Dan Sweetman, Storyboard Artist
Sweetman has contributed storyboards to over 100 films, including “Braveheart” and “Birdman.” He describes his role as a visual guide that aids directors in maintaining narrative integrity. By creating storyboards, he ensures that the vision is clear before filming starts, allowing for a smooth production process.
J. Dennis Washington, Production Designer
Washington, now retired after 56 years in the industry, has worked on iconic films such as “Stand by Me” and “The Fugitive.” He reflects on the importance of creating authentic environments that align with the film's narrative, drawing from his experiences with directors like John Huston.
