Dave Fanning Reflects on His Career, Regrets, and the Love of His Life

What did you want to be growing up?
I wanted to do anything at all I could do with music. Growing up in a family of six, I was immersed in music from a young age. The arrival of The Beatles when I was seven changed everything for me; I was a fan from the start!
What has been your greatest achievement in life?
Luck. I consider myself lucky, and I believe I made the most of the opportunities that came my way.
Have you any regrets?
None whatsoever. I sleep soundly at night, although I sometimes think I could have asked for more money for gigs.
Who or what is the greatest love of your life?
Without a doubt, my wife Ursula, my kids, and of course, The Beatles.
When are you happiest?
I am happiest when I’m with my family and when I’m working.
Has any song or movie changed your life?
The movie Nashville had a profound effect on me when I was about 20. I loved its unique storytelling with multiple characters, and it inspired me to explore music further.
What are you most looking forward to as you get older?
More work!
How do you want to be remembered?
Honestly, I don’t think about being remembered. I am who I am, and I’m content with that.
Do you like your personality?
That’s a tough question! I think I do, though I can be quite lazy at times.
What’s the worst job you’ve ever done?
I once had a job in a field picking up big rocks to clear the way for a combine harvester. It was an awful experience!
What song would you like played at your funeral?
I’d choose Sometimes by My Bloody Valentine or Tin Soldier by Small Faces, but I’d want the video shown as well.
What drives you on?
I love the work I do. Seeing the final product makes me feel accomplished and satisfied.
