New Video Series on Social Work Pathways
The Northern Ireland Social Care Council has launched a new video series titled ‘Pathways into Social Work’. This initiative highlights the various routes individuals have taken to earn a Degree in Social Work in Northern Ireland.
These videos are part of the annual #Yes2SocialWork campaign, aimed at encouraging individuals to explore career opportunities in social work. With the UCAS deadline approaching, the videos showcase the journeys of seven individuals currently studying or recently graduated from the degree program.
Diverse Stories and Backgrounds
The featured stories include:
- School leavers embarking on their educational journey.
- Graduates returning to study through the Relevant Graduate Route.
- Mature students pursuing career changes or advancements.
Encouragement from the Social Care Council
Declan McAllister, the Interim Chief Executive of the Social Care Council, has reached out to post-primary schools in Northern Ireland, encouraging A-Level students to consider the Degree in Social Work.
“The Degree in Social Work is a pathway to a fulfilling and rewarding career where individuals can make a positive difference in people’s lives,” McAllister stated.
He emphasized that studying social work allows individuals to work with a diverse range of communities, making a significant impact.

This year’s campaign particularly targets those looking for a career change into social work, addressing the growing demand for professionals in this field. McAllister noted:
“The role of social workers has never been more important. It offers real purpose, personal satisfaction, and numerous employment opportunities.”

- Queen’s University Belfast
- Ulster University (Magee Campus)
- Belfast Metropolitan College (Millfield Campus)
- South West College (Dungannon Campus)
- Open University (employer-sponsored route)
Currently, there are two degree routes for studying social work in Northern Ireland: the three-year Undergraduate Route and the two-year Relevant Graduate Route for those with a related degree.
