Discover How Anwyl Apprentices Are Shaping Their Futures in the Construction Industry

As National Apprenticeship Week kicks off, two trainees at Ewloe-based Anwyl are sharing insights into how their apprenticeships are transforming their career paths while offering valuable advice to potential apprentices.
Meet the Apprentices
Ruby Jones, 20, from Mold, and Alex Davies, 22, from Colwyn Bay, are on distinct journeys—one in human resources and the other in site management—but both are flourishing through Anwyl’s apprenticeship programs.
Ruby's Journey in Human Resources
Ruby began her journey as a human resources apprentice in January 2024 after postponing her place at the University of York to study psychology. She sought a way to work and learn simultaneously, and the apprenticeship was the ideal fit.
“Getting into HR can be challenging due to qualification and experience requirements,” Ruby shared. “The apprenticeship offered a perfect opportunity to gain experience while continuing my education.”
Now serving as an HR coordinator, Ruby has gained extensive hands-on experience, from onboarding to conducting probationary reviews. She has also completed her CIPD Level 3 qualification and trained as a mental health first aider.
“Every day in HR is unique, which is what I love about it,” she said, highlighting Anwyl’s modern approach to employee wellbeing.
Alex's Path in Site Management
Alex, a former competitive skier, is pursuing an NVQ Level 3 in site management while working on Anwyl’s Parc Bodafon development in Llandudno. He chose this path to blend physical work outdoors with academic challenges.
“The apprenticeship appealed to me because of the variety and routine it offers. There’s never a dull moment,” Alex stated.
His daily tasks include site rounds, liaising with contractors, and managing on-site activities. His advice for other apprentices is simple: seek support and keep persevering.
“It’s a lot of work, but it gets easier as you find your footing,” he advised.
The Value of Apprenticeships
Both Ruby and Alex agree that apprenticeships offer an ideal pathway to start a career while gaining invaluable workplace experience. Ruby encourages others to seize the opportunity:
“It’s the perfect mix of education and hands-on experience.”
In the future, she aims to complete CIPD Level 5 and become an HR manager, while Alex aspires to work his way up to site manager in the construction sector.
Anwyl, now in its 95th year, continues to invest in apprenticeships and career development opportunities. For more information, visit careers.anwyl.co.uk.
