Acting has always been a profession where one generation inspires the next, and Gene Hackman named James Cagney as the single biggest inspiration for his legendary career. Unlike many of his peers, Hackman's aspiration was not directed towards Marlon Brando, but rather to Cagney, who shared a significant connection with the director behind one of Hackman’s greatest performances.

Mutual Respect Between Legends

Clint Eastwood described Hackman as the only perfect actor he’d ever worked with, highlighting the deep mutual respect between the two. Both grew up idolizing the same actor and shared a dream of a career in film.

The First Movie Experience

Hackman’s passion for acting ignited when he saw his first movie, captivated by the Golden Age star who portrayed tough characters. He recalled, "I was so captured by the action guys. Jimmy Cagney was my favourite..." Hackman found Cagney’s timing and vitality inspiring, resonating more with him than other leading men like Errol Flynn.

Parallels in Their Careers

While Hackman and Cagney shared many parallels, such as breaking through as character actors and winning Oscars, Hackman managed to avoid the typecasting that Cagney experienced. Cagney's career was often defined by gangster roles, whereas Hackman displayed a versatile range throughout his career.

Cagney's Enduring Legacy

Though not as revered as Brando, Cagney remains a pivotal figure for both Hackman and Eastwood, who together have garnered six Oscars and a collection of timeless films. Cagney's influence on these Hollywood titans emphasizes his importance in shaping the future of acting.
