Discover the Growing Appeal of Careers in the UK's Voluntary Sector

The Rise of Careers in the Voluntary Sector

More people across the UK are reconsidering what they want from work—and increasingly, they’re finding the answer in the voluntary sector. With nearly 978,000 people employed in charities and not-for-profit organisations, the sector now accounts for around three per cent of the UK workforce.

Over the last decade, this has grown by more than 30 per cent, outpacing both the private and public sectors. What’s drawing people in? For many, it's about more than a payslip. A growing number of professionals are trading traditional roles for positions that offer greater flexibility, improved work-life balance, and most importantly, a deeper sense of purpose.

These roles span a wide range—from marketing and fundraising to social care, HR, and education—giving people from all backgrounds the opportunity to apply their skills in a more meaningful way.

Unlike the often rigid structures of corporate employment, the voluntary sector is embracing flexibility. Around 40 per cent of charity roles offer hybrid or remote working options, compared to just 28 per cent in other sectors. For working parents, carers, or those managing long-term health conditions, this level of flexibility can be life-changing. And while salaries are generally lower, they're improving. Charity jobs now average £36,100 outside London and £38,300 in the capital, with wages rising steadily in recent years.

Beyond the practical perks, there’s a powerful emotional payoff. Many people working in the sector report higher job satisfaction and longer tenure—averaging 4.3 years, which ranks third for staff retention across UK industries. Employees consistently cite a stronger connection to their work and a sense that their efforts directly benefit their communities.

There are challenges, of course. The sector is facing rising demand for services alongside funding pressures, and vacancies have nearly doubled since 2011. But this creates opportunities too—particularly for skilled professionals who want to help charities grow, adapt, and innovate.

As organisations invest more in recruitment, training, and support, the potential to build a long-term, fulfilling career in the voluntary sector has never been greater. Whether you're looking to completely change careers or pick up a few meaningful hours a week, the voluntary sector offers more than just a job—it offers purpose, community, and impact.
