The Four Rs of Ministry
While traditional education focuses on the three Rs—reading, writing, and arithmetic—Ms. Spence emphasizes the importance of four Rs in ministry: reliability, refresh, review, and rejoice.
- Reliability: "If you say you will do something, do it. People are more important than meetings."
- Refresh: Taking time off is crucial; ministers should not wear their lack of rest as a badge of honor.
- Review: Regularly evaluate both practical and spiritual aspects of your ministry.
- Rejoice: Celebrate the calling to serve the Church and its people.

Rev Elisabeth Spence became one of the Church of Scotland's first pioneering ministers in Bonnyrigg, Midlothian.
A Journey into Ministry
Ms. Spence's journey into ministry began after a career in education. Moving to the Black Isle, she became actively involved in her local church, which ultimately led her to pursue a ministerial path.
Her first charge as a minister was in Dundee, where she embraced the challenge and the community's willingness to innovate.
Pioneering New Paths
Even as she considered retirement, Ms. Spence took on a pioneering role in a new estate in Bonnyrigg, where she had the freedom to explore what ministry could look like outside of traditional church settings.
This role required creativity, networking, and bravery. She emphasized that every church has the potential to be a pioneering ministry by responding to the needs of their community.
