Discover the Inspiring NHS Journey of a Retired Couple in Their New Book

A Retired Couple's NHS Legacy
Peter Sykes, 81, and his wife Jane, 82, have co-authored a fascinating book titled ‘Being a Surgeon and Being a Surgeon’s Wife’, sharing their extensive experiences in the NHS and its impact on their family.
Peter began his medical journey at the old Ashton General Hospital, while Jane dedicated her career as a community medical officer in Tameside. The book offers an honest and personal account filled with intriguing patient stories that highlight the challenges and pressures faced in the medical field.
Peter reflects on issues such as medical malpractice, sexual discrimination, and political interference, supported by real patient anecdotes. He served as a consultant surgeon for 27 years at Trafford General, later becoming a medical director of an NHS Trust, even earning a UK Medical Management Team of the Year award.
His surgical training took place between Ashton General and Manchester Royal Infirmary, where he recalls the demanding yet rewarding experiences of his early career. Jane’s contributions spanned from 1967 to 1997, focusing on child health and vaccination services, impacting countless families in Tameside.
The couple’s story not only chronicles their professional lives but also addresses the personal sacrifices made by their family. Peter, an experienced author, aimed to capture the highs and lows of a surgeon’s life while honoring Jane’s supportive role.
The book is available on Amazon in paperback, ebook, and audio formats, with proceeds benefiting the East Cheshire Hospice where Peter previously served as a trustee.
