Discover the Inspiring NHS Journey of a Retired Couple Through Their New Book

A Fascinating NHS Journey

A retired couple, Peter and Jane Sykes, have co-authored a compelling book detailing their extensive careers within the NHS and its profound impact on their family life.

Peter Sykes NHS Tameside book

Peter, aged 81, began his medical training at the historic Ashton General Hospital, while Jane, 82, served as a community medical officer in Tameside. Their book, titled ‘Being a Surgeon and Being a Surgeon’s Wife’, offers an honest and personal account of their experiences.

Insightful Patient Stories

Peter describes the book as a fascinating collection of patient stories that highlight the realities of medical practice and the pressures faced by healthcare professionals. He discusses various challenges such as medical malpractice, sexual discrimination, and political interference, all illustrated through authentic patient narratives.

Peter dedicated 27 years as a consultant surgeon at Trafford General, concluding his career in 2003 as the medical director of an NHS Trust, where he earned the UK Medical Management Team of the Year award. He was also involved in national discussions regarding the quality of surgical services during his final years.

Jane’s Vital Contributions

Jane's contributions to healthcare were equally significant. From 1967 to 1997, she focused on child health, overseeing immunization and vaccination services across Tameside, ensuring the health of many residents aged 35 to 65 today. Her role included managing baby clinics and participating in the Harold Shipman inquiry, a daunting task that highlighted the complexities of her work.

A New Chapter in Writing

Peter, who has authored four novels and two short story collections with medical themes, felt compelled to write this book with greater gravitas. He aims to showcase the highs and lows of being a surgeon and the familial sacrifices involved. Jane supported his career by choosing a path without overnight responsibilities, allowing their family to thrive despite the challenges.

Availability and Charity Support

Their book is available in paperback for £10.99, along with ebook and audio versions. All proceeds will be donated to the East Cheshire Hospice in Macclesfield, where Peter has previously served as a trustee and continues to support fundraising efforts.
