Empowering Change: The Rise of Women in Personal Training

Surge in Female Personal Trainers
A fitness training provider, OriGym, in collaboration with Active Careers, has reported a 25% increase in female enrolment in personal training courses since 2016. This increase reflects a growing female presence in a field traditionally dominated by men.
Changing Dynamics in the Fitness Industry
According to data from over 40,000 students, women now represent 46% of personal training job applicants, showcasing a significant shift in the industry.
Motivations Behind the Shift
To understand this trend, a survey was conducted with 824 female personal trainers. The top motivations for entering the field included:
- Helping other women (19%)
- Improved job satisfaction (16%)
- Flexibility (15%)
Interestingly, motivations such as income and entrepreneurship ranked lower, indicating that personal fulfilment and the desire to support others are key drivers for women in this profession.
Profile of Female Trainers
The average age of women qualifying as personal trainers is 32.2 years. Many trainers over 30 shared that personal health concerns and a desire for a career change influenced their decision to enter the fitness industry. For instance, Alison Eade, an OriGym graduate, cited menopause as a significant factor in her career choice, aiming to assist other women facing similar life stages.
