Empowering Women in STEM: A Glimpse into the Future at the STEM Women Careers Fair

Science Editor Anoushka Sinha shares her inspiring journey at the STEM Women’s career fair, held on 11 June 2025 at the Queen Elizabeth II Centre near St James Park. This event was a beacon of hope and opportunity for young women graduating with degrees in STEM, showcasing a wide array of career paths from leading companies like British Airways, Rothesay insurance, and the Royal Navy.
Highlights from the Fair:
- Diverse Opportunities: Exhibitions from Institute of Science and Technology Austria (ISTA) and Cambridge GaN Devices (CGD) highlighted internships for English-speaking students eager to dive into research and further education.
- Breaking Stereotypes: A representative from BNP Paribas emphasized the value of curiosity and the willingness to learn over traditional finance backgrounds.
- Inspiring Talks: Presentations by AWE Nuclear Security Technologies, Capgemini, and GUNVOR featured insights from professionals like Nana Akua T-Mensah and Catherine Noël, who shared their career journeys and advice.
Challenges and Progress: Despite the strides made, KCL’s Womxn in STEM society and postgraduate researchers point out ongoing issues like mental health disparities and the gender gap in STEM fields. Yet, events like these, including the upcoming fair in October, are paving the way for a more inclusive and supportive environment for women and queer individuals in STEM.
