A Remarkable Career Shift at 60
Charles Allen, who spent 30 years working for Arsenal Football Club as the marketing director, made a bold decision during the Covid pandemic to retrain as a teacher. Now in his 60s, he calls this move the "best career choice I ever made." With support from the charity Now Teach, he now works as a modern language teacher in Ipswich, inspiring students with his passion for Spanish.

Finding Purpose and Passion
Allen reached a point in his career where he realized he enjoyed inspiring people and wanted to focus more on this aspect. He also aimed to leverage his long-standing passion for speaking Spanish, which he began learning in his youth as a "superpower" to stand out. He believed this skill kept him "ahead of the game" and now uses it to motivate the next generation of language learners.
Embracing the Challenges of Teaching
After leaving London for Suffolk, Allen now teaches at Holbrook Academy near Ipswich. He describes teaching as a "challenging" profession but also "the most rewarding job" he has ever had. He finds immense satisfaction in seeing learning break out in the classroom and helping students develop life skills.

Support for Late-Career Changes
Graihagh Crawshaw-Sadler, CEO of Now Teach, highlights that more people are choosing to work longer and seek purposeful next stages in their careers. While the teaching profession often recruits recent graduates, Now Teach aims to make it easier for older demographics to transition into teaching, bringing valuable experiences and life skills to schools.
