How a £25k Loan Transformed a Passion for Lock-Picking into a Thriving Career in Cornwall

Unlocking a New Career Path
A Cornwall locksmith, Wesley Davidson, has turned his unique talent for lock-picking into a flourishing career, thanks to a £25,000 loan from SWIG Finance, part of the British Business Bank.
From Hobby to Franchise Success
At 47 years old, Wesley is now one of the most successful franchisees of Lockrite Cornwall Ltd. He discovered his knack for lock-picking in his youth, saying, "It was for sport – entirely legal," after watching videos on YouTube and practicing with a see-through lock.
A Shift from Unfulfilling Work
Despite initially training as a plasterer, Wesley's passion for locksmithing was reignited in his mid-40s while managing a team of drivers at a large delivery company. Feeling overworked and unfulfilled, he sought inspiration from a friend who had ventured into a franchise.
Researching the Right Opportunity
Wesley conducted thorough research into the locksmithing industry, examining the number of businesses and their response times to ensure it could provide a sustainable income. He ultimately chose Lockrite due to its reputation, stating, "So many of their locksmiths have been with them for 10, maybe even 15 years, which suggests it’s a good company to work with."
Enjoying the Flexibility and Fulfillment
Now, Wesley enjoys the flexibility of working from his van, describing it as his mobile office. He finds joy in helping clients who are often in crisis, such as being locked out of their homes or businesses. "I wake up every day and I relish the challenge," he shared.
Support from SWIG Finance
Jo MacEachen, a senior start-up loans manager with SWIG Finance, praised Wesley's dedication and thorough preparation, highlighting his commitment to ensuring the success of his new venture.
