A careers transport bursary is helping hundreds of young people across South Tyneside get to the opportunities that could shape their future.

Backed by the Dogger Bank Community Fund, the South Tyneside Careers Transport Bursary is now in its second year and aims to break down the financial barriers that can prevent young people from accessing valuable career-focused experiences.

The scheme has already supported 24 schools and nearly 1,000 students, funding transport for 28 career-related visits.

These visits have included employer site tours, work experience placements, and clean energy job fairs, such as those held at the Port of Tyne.

Sara Dunlop, economic growth and skills service manager at South Tyneside Council, said: "Connecting young people with real-world career experiences is vital in developing the skills pipeline our local businesses need. By opening their eyes to different career pathways and sectors, it helps to raise aspirations while showcasing the exciting jobs and industries that will shape the economy of tomorrow."

Kay Doragh, community investment manager at Dogger Bank Wind Farm, said: "It might not sound glamorous, but funding transport is one of the most effective ways we can support young people. By removing a simple barrier, we’re helping open up opportunities that can shape their future — giving more students the chance to explore careers, build confidence and see what’s possible."

The bursary gives students insight into education, training, and employment pathways they might otherwise not encounter.

With ongoing support and the potential backing of additional businesses, there are hopes to further expand the scheme to reach even more students in the future.

Any businesses interested in getting involved can contact business@southtyneside.gov.uk to support the bursary and help unlock more opportunities for young people across South Tyneside.
