Stewards Academy's Career Development Programme: A Success Story
The Careers Development Programme at Stewards Academy is thriving, particularly with Year 9 students, as they prepare for their educational and professional futures. With a focus on Key Stage 4 and Post-16 options, the academy provides extensive guidance and support to help students navigate their GCSE and vocational choices.

Structured Support and Engagement
Starting in September, the programme kicked off with assemblies to explain the options process and available choices. This was complemented by an information booklet for students, parents, and carers, and an 'Options Evening' where departments showcased subjects for Years 10 and 11. The event facilitated numerous discussions and questions, leading to students submitting their initial choices online.
Based on these submissions, a timetable dropdown day was organized, offering personalized schedules for students to try out different option subjects. Students demonstrated remarkable focus and enthusiasm throughout the day, seizing the opportunity to explore their interests.
Student Feedback and Impact
One student shared, "I really enjoyed the day. It has made me think about the choice I made, and I am happy with the subjects I have chosen. I am glad we got to try them out before we start year 10." Another added, "I found it beneficial as I wasn’t sure about a couple of subjects and it has helped me make up my mind."
Personalized Guidance and Real-World Experience
All Year 9 students will now have one-on-one meetings with senior staff to discuss their choices and future aspirations. Additionally, the academy encourages students to experience the 'world of work' by spending a day with a family member in a workplace. This initiative aims to provide a first taste of work beyond school and inspire thoughts about work experience in Year 10.
Insights from the Careers Lead
Di da Vighi, Careers Lead, emphasized the importance of support: "It is really important that our young people and their parents/carers feel supported throughout the process of selecting their Key Stage 4 options. It gives students a sense of ownership about their education... We offer a diverse range of options including, but not limited to, humanities, languages, performing arts, visual arts, technology, sports, business, and vocational subjects. Year 9 is an important year for students to start thinking about their futures and the world of work outside of the academy. We encourage all students to fully embrace the opportunities available."
