Inspiring Future Builders: Queensferry Students Explore Exciting Careers in Construction


QUEENSFERRY High School students recently explored potential construction careers during a visit to the Lovell development, The Crossings, in South Queensferry. This initiative was organized in collaboration with Sigma Capital Group, known for sponsoring the ‘Class of Your Own DEC (Design Engineer Construct) course, and Sanctuary Scotland.
Highlights of the Event
The event underscored the significance of sustainability and innovation in construction, reinforcing Lovell's commitment to delivering social value in local communities.
The Crossings is a mixed-tenure development that integrates modern living with sustainable design, featuring:
- 398 homes, including:
- 100 for social rent with Sanctuary Scotland
- 185 new homes for private rent by Sigma Simple Life
- 113 open-market homes for sale by Lovell.
Students aged 15-17 participated in a comprehensive program, which included:
- A health and safety induction
- A presentation on careers in construction
- A discussion on environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles led by Sigma
- A painting activity under the guidance of the Lovell team.
The Need for Future Workers
The event aimed to inspire students to consider the career opportunities in the construction industry, which, according to the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB), needs 26,100 extra workers by 2028 in Scotland.
Bob Strachan, contracts manager at Lovell, emphasized the importance of attracting talented individuals to support rewarding careers in the construction sector. He stated, “Bringing the students onto a live development site was a brilliant way to show them the real-world application of construction and its crucial role in building sustainable communities.”
Niamh Waldron, ESG director at Sigma Capital Group, praised Lovell's collaborative approach and community engagement, noting that it is vital for the next generation to understand the intersection of sustainability and innovation in construction.
Conor Watt, development manager at Sanctuary Scotland, highlighted how partnerships like The Crossings provide value beyond housing and spark interest in an industry essential for community development and tackling future housing challenges.
Scott Harris, curriculum leader of technologies at Queensferry High, remarked on the positive impact of such visits in opening students' eyes to exciting career possibilities while offering practical insights into the construction industry.
