Northumbria Healthcare Launches Career Ambassador Network

Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust has officially launched its new career ambassador network with a well-attended event that brought together colleagues from across the trust who have volunteered for this exciting new role.

Career ambassadors at the launch event

This event marked the first opportunity for ambassadors to meet, share experiences, exchange ideas and learn more about how they will support people across the region to explore future careers in health and care.

How Career Ambassadors Will Make a Difference

Career ambassadors will help inspire the next generation of NHS professionals by engaging with schools, colleges and community groups, as well as supporting those who may face additional barriers to employment, including refugees, care leavers and people at risk of homelessness. The network has been created to bring colleagues together from all areas of the trust, ensuring that the full breadth of health and care careers are represented.

Ruth Auton, head of education, learning and organisational development, thanked the volunteers who have stepped forward to be part of the initiative:

"Our career ambassadors are central to widening participation and helping people see what's possible in their career. This is a really exciting new role for the trust, and I want to thank every colleague who has volunteered. Their passion and commitment will make a genuine difference to people who may never have considered a future in health and care."

Aligning with Community Commitment

The event outlined how the ambassadors will work with the widening participation team to coordinate outreach activity, support placements and champion opportunities across departments. Attendees also heard how the role aligns with the trust's commitment to promoting education, employment and tackling inequality in local communities.

Wayne Daley, head of corporate social responsibility, highlighted the importance of the programme for the region:

"Our career ambassadors will help us reach out to people of all ages and backgrounds, showing them that there is a place for them in health and care, and a pathway that suits their strengths. This work is a key part of our community promise and supports our ambition to open doors, remove barriers and create real opportunities."

First-Hand Perspective from an Ambassador

Ben Widdrington, senior physiotherapist and career ambassador, shared his enthusiasm for the programme:

"The career ambassadors programme gives us the chance to get out into our communities and show people what a future in health and care can look like. When we visit local schools and colleges, we're able to highlight the incredible variety of roles within the trust and help young people see how their interests and strengths could translate into meaningful careers. It's a privilege to inspire the next generation and to demonstrate that there is a place for everyone in healthcare."

Future Growth and Recognition

The career ambassador network will continue to grow over the coming months, with ongoing support, training and a dedicated annual recognition event planned to celebrate the achievements of those involved.
