As students across the country anxiously open their A-Level results, awareness campaign Generation Logistics is promoting the industry as a viable career path for young people.
Ben Smith, now head of transport solutions at Tesco, started by grabbing a graduate trainee role in logistics at the supermarket. The 35-year-old is keen to encourage the next generation to consider the opportunities available.
“My career progression has been achieved through continued personal development and business growth, with Tesco providing strong support through ongoing learning and development, including funding to gain necessary qualifications.”
Smith’s role oversees the primary operation, which covers finished supplier goods as well as home and clothing items moving from China and South-East Asia to Tesco’s distribution centres, and Tesco’s rail network.
He said the main factor which attracted him to apply was the variety and fast-paced nature of the role:
“Every day is so different! I always wanted to eventually advance to this role.”
“I really enjoy the mix of strategic thinking, but also the buzz and anticipation of the day-to-day operations.”
Bethany Windsor, Generation Logistics programme director, said many students and graduates were not aware of the variety of careers available within logistics:
