Meet the Inspiring Airbus Apprentice Who Balances Engineering and Dance: A Journey of 'Earn and Learn'

Inspiring Journey of Rebecca Roles
Rebecca Roles, a second-year degree apprentice at Airbus, is not only honing her engineering skills but also pursuing her passion for ballroom dancing. At just 20 years old, she encourages young people to consider early careers programs.
From Uncertainty to Clarity
Originally unsure of her future after completing her A Levels in Biology, Chemistry, and Maths, Rebecca explored various paths including medicine and finance. However, her interest in STEM subjects led her to engineering, following in the footsteps of her brother who also completed an engineering degree apprenticeship at Airbus. She reflects, "I’m really glad I ended up doing one, they are such an amazing opportunity for students leaving Sixth Form or college."
Learn and Earn
Rebecca emphasizes the benefits of degree apprenticeships over traditional university routes, stating, "To learn and earn at the same time... it’s a no-brainer to do a degree apprenticeship over university."
A Supportive Environment
Having a family history with Airbus, Rebecca feels secure in her career choice, noting, "I knew that as an employer they took care of their staff, and I’d have a safe career."
Embracing Diversity in Engineering
As a female engineer in a predominantly male field, Rebecca shares her experience: "When you’re walking around, there are definitely a lot more men than women. But that has never, ever been a hindrance to me." She encourages other women in STEM to be confident, stating, "They will just take you at face value and judge you on your skills and what you bring to the company."
Memorable Experiences at Airbus
Rebecca has had remarkable experiences during her apprenticeship, including meeting Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and participating in team-building trips. She recalls, "Airbus also send us to different trips, like an outward-bound one to the Lake District where you meet international apprentices and do team-building exercises."
Balancing Work and Passion
Apart from engineering, Rebecca is an accomplished ballroom dancer, having competed nationally since the age of four. She manages to balance her degree, NVQ, and work with dancing, thanks to the flexible hours provided by Airbus. "It has been tricky balancing a degree, NVQ and work – but with the flexi time you get, I can easily make it work around the dancing."
