MPs Set to Review Exciting Job Centre Reforms for Skills and Careers Development

The government is aiming to enhance employment rates by integrating careers advice into job centres. This initiative will be examined by MPs later this year as part of the Get Britain Working reforms.

Job Centre Inquiry

Plans are underway to merge the Department for Education-funded National Careers Service with job centres across England, aiming to provide better employment support. Debbie Abrahams, the chair of the work and pensions committee, emphasized the importance of this reform, stating that job centres serve as crucial access points for both benefits and employment.

The committee is currently inviting submissions for its inquiry until March 3.

Aiming for 2 Million More Jobs

The government has set a target to increase the employment rate from 74.8% to 80%, which translates to an additional two million individuals finding work. They have also proposed a youth guarantee for jobs, training, or apprenticeships and suggested enhanced collaboration among various government departments.

Stephen Evans, CEO of the Learning and Work Institute, pointed out that many individuals seeking work are missing out on critical support, particularly highlighting that only one in ten jobless disabled people receive assistance each year. He advocates for a more accessible approach from Jobcentre Plus.

Gareth Thomas, a skills policy adviser, stresses the need for outreach services as many people live far from their nearest job centre. Jobcentre Plus is specifically designed to assist benefits claimants, while the National Careers Service offers free guidance on training and careers through various channels.

In England, this service is currently managed by eight regional prime contractors, which subcontract to around 70 smaller providers, costing approximately £53 million annually.
