Ibrox legend Graeme Souness has declared that his five-year stint at Rangers Football Club was the 'best job' of his entire career. Joining as a player-manager in 1986, the former Liverpool midfielder spent five transformative years in Glasgow, securing seven major honours during his tenure.
A Bold Decision at 33
Souness, now 72, reflects on his 'brave and mad' decision to take charge of Rangers at just 33 years old. "I still have a laugh to myself and wonder how brave and mad I was to take the Rangers job at 33-years-old," he admitted. Despite his experience at top football clubs, he quickly realized that managing and playing are two completely different jobs. The scale of interest from supporters at Glasgow Rangers was unlike anything he had encountered before.
Learning Through Mistakes and Responsibility
"I made my mistakes, but when you are young, you are full of confidence, and I was fearless," Souness shared. He expressed a desire to relive the experience, including the errors, highlighting the growth and learning that came with the role. As a player, he only had to focus on himself, but as a manager, he discovered an enormous responsibility towards the players, supporters, and the club itself.
The Joy of Impact
What made the Rangers job so special was the pleasure and enjoyment of being part of a movement that brought joy and happiness to so many people. Souness emphasized that this sense of contribution and impact is what cemented it as the best job he ever had, surpassing even his achievements as a player at the highest level.
