Revived Rugby Careers: Meet the Welsh Players Getting a Second Chance

The Impact of Warren Gatland's Departure

Warren Gatland's exit from the Welsh Rugby Union has opened doors for numerous players who previously felt their international careers were over. This article highlights eight players whose prospects have been rejuvenated.

1. Johnny Williams

The Scarlets centre, known for his powerful carries, was overlooked by Gatland despite being a standout performer. His ability to make significant post-contact metres is a crucial asset that Wales has been missing.

2. Morgan Morris

At 26 years old, Morris has consistently shone in the United Rugby Championship but never received a chance under Gatland. His explosive carrying and breakdown skills may now catch the eye of the new coaching staff.

3. Jarrod Evans

The 28-year-old outside-half has been called back into the Wales squad after a long absence. His relationship with interim coach Matt Sherratt could lead to a resurgence in his international career.

4. Taine Basham

Basham, previously excluded from the last three squads, is a dynamic carrier with the potential to shine under fresh leadership. His move to Cardiff may help revitalize his role in the national team.

5. Ioan Lloyd

Lloyd's talent as a dangerous runner has been recognized, but his best position remains debated. The new coach might see potential in him that Gatland overlooked.

6. Thomas Young

The 32-year-old back rower has been a top performer in the URC but was neglected by Gatland. His skills at the breakdown and dynamic play make him a strong candidate for recall.

7. Olly Cracknell

With a potential appointment of Michael Cheika as coach, Cracknell’s physical style of play could earn him a spot in the squad. His past performance as a powerful ball carrier is invaluable.

8. Ross Moriarty

After not playing since 2022, Moriarty's name re-emerges as he seeks a return to the UK. His physicality and experience are traits that Wales could benefit from in future matches.

This shift in coaching may allow these players to demonstrate their talents on the international stage once again.
