Shaping the Future of Transport: ITS UK Celebrates Young Talent in Early Careers Essay Competition

Two rising stars in the transport technology sector have been crowned winners of the 2024/25 Intelligent Transport Systems UK (ITS UK) Early Careers Essay Competition. Esther Fobi, an Engineering Student from Swansea University, and Will Dismorr, a Digital Engineer at 4Way Consulting, have been recognized for their outstanding contributions to the future of transport.

Esther Fobi won the best student/apprentice essay with her insightful piece, "A Transport Network for All: Bridging Medical Data and Engineering to Create Truly Inclusive Mobility Solutions". Her work explores how medical data can enhance accessibility in transport systems. Meanwhile, Will Dismorr took home the prize for the best early careers professional essay with his submission, "How do we ensure our transport network is ready for Net Zero", offering a comprehensive look at decarbonising transport.

Both winners will enjoy a career-boosting prize package, including a £500 cash prize, mentoring sessions with industry leaders, and the opportunity to have their essays published and shared across the industry. The awards were presented at the ITS UK Early Careers Drinks Reception, a key event celebrating the impact of emerging professionals in the transport technology sector.

The reception, held in central London, provided a platform for networking and collaboration among early-career and experienced professionals from various sectors. The competition, supported by the Institute of Highway Engineers (IHE), highlights the importance of nurturing young talent to drive innovation in transport technology.

Max Sugarman, ITS UK Chief Executive, praised the winners: "The calibre of entries this year demonstrates the huge amount of talent and expertise in the next generation. Esther and Will’s essays were not only insightful but also creative, showcasing their ability to tackle complex issues."

Esther Fobi expressed her gratitude, stating, "This recognition is a reminder that we can design systems that work better for everyone." Will Dismorr added, "I’m deeply thankful for the opportunity to share my ideas and for the mentors who inspire me."

Lyle Andrew of the IHE emphasized the growing importance of ITS in the transport network and encouraged young engineers to showcase their skills, celebrating their success and promoting the sector.
