Tesco, one of the UK's largest supermarket chains, is implementing significant operational changes that will impact hundreds of employees and reshape the customer experience in its Express stores.
What's Changing in Tesco Express Stores?
At the core of this shake-up is a major shift in bakery operations. Tesco is eliminating its centralised bakery system and introducing new in-store bakeries in approximately 100 Express locations. This move aims to provide fresher products and a more traditional bakery atmosphere in these convenience-sized stores.
Alongside the bakery changes, Tesco is also adjusting stock replenishment schedules in some shops, which involves modifying delivery and shelf-stocking routines to improve efficiency.
Additionally, the retailer is increasing investment in its F&F Clothing ranges in selected stores, with plans to enhance layout, choice, and overall customer experience.
Impact on Jobs and Employee Support
These operational changes will result in the loss of around 380 roles across the country. Tesco has emphasised that this decision was not made lightly and is part of a broader strategy to simplify operations and boost efficiency in a highly competitive grocery market.
A Tesco spokesperson stated that the business must continue evolving to meet customer expectations on value, quality, and service. They highlighted that efficiencies gained in recent years have funded investments in key areas for shoppers.
Affected employees will receive support, and Tesco notes that there are currently about 1,500 vacancies available internally in retail and distribution roles. The company is committed to helping colleagues find alternative positions within the business.
Tesco UK CEO Ashwin Prasad acknowledged the difficulty of decisions affecting staff but stressed that these changes are necessary to maintain competitiveness and deliver what customers expect.
