New research reveals that Brits are making major life changes in their 30s, with the average person moving abroad at 31, switching careers at 32, starting a business at 33, and launching a side hustle at 34.
According to a study by Vodafone, 85% of people are currently working towards a major life goal, and four in 10 say they are more ambitious than ever. However, people wait an average of two years before acting on their ambitions, leaving 20% feeling regret and wishing they had acted sooner.
What's Holding People Back?
Financial constraints (22%) emerged as the biggest barrier, followed by:
- Lack of confidence or self-belief (15%)
- Lack of time (13%)
- Fear of failure (12%)
- Limited access to resources or tools (9%)
What Triggers Action?
A major life event often provides the push needed. The most common catalysts include:
- Bereavement (27%)
- Losing a job or being made redundant (25%)
- Becoming a parent (25%)
- Realising life is too short to wait (26%)
- Achieving greater financial stability (23%)
- Feeling more confident (22%)
The Role of Technology
Technology is increasingly central to turning ambition into action, with 42% believing improved connectivity has helped them achieve their goals. Vodafone has opened the UK's first Opportunity Hub, a space designed to provide tools, technology, advice, and connections to unlock opportunity.
Speakers at the launch event included Rochelle Humes, Roman Kemp, Anna Whitehouse, David Waters, and Jade Beason, who shared practical advice and support.
A VodafoneThree spokesperson said: "Britain isn't short of ambition. The challenge is turning ambition into action. Our research shows that connectivity is increasingly part of that equation... That's why we're investing in initiatives like The Opportunity Hub and our £11billion plan to build the UK's best network."
