Top Degrees for a Secure, Well-Paid Career in 2026: Expert Picks

UK graduate hiring is finally picking up, with 47% of employers offering entry-level roles from July 2026, according to ManpowerGroup’s Employment Outlook Survey. After a period of 'rock bottom' hiring, this is a 15% increase year-on-year. But which degrees and sectors offer the best prospects? Experts weigh in.
Finance and Insurance
Around 42% of UK finance and insurance firms are hiring graduates this summer. Broking roles are particularly lucrative: Portman Finance Group offers graduates a starting salary of £36,000, with uncapped commission pushing earnings to £70,000–£85,000 after qualification, and over £150,000 by year three. Requirements: minimum ABB A-levels and a 2:1 degree in any discipline. Competitive mindset is key – Portman looks for graduates who played sport at a high level.
At Zurich, graduates start on £33,000, with roles in business management, tech, sustainable energy, and data analytics. A 2:1 degree in any discipline is required, plus strong analytical and communication skills.
Trades and Logistics
47% of trades and logistics companies are hiring graduates. Baxter Freight offers 28 new graduate account manager positions, starting at £30,000 with uncapped bonus, rising to £50,000 plus company car within four years. Requirements: a 2:1 degree in any subject. Eagerness to learn, curiosity, and resilience are highly valued.
Tech and IT
Over half (52%) of UK tech and IT firms are actively seeking graduates. While technical roles are common, sales is an overlooked pathway into this fast-growing sector. Recruitment expert Sarah Skelton notes that successful entry-level candidates can earn up to £35,000, with potential to triple that within three years. Coachability and curiosity matter more than the specific degree.
Public Sector, Health, and Social Services
46% of public sector organisations are hiring graduates. Police Now’s graduate programme offers roles in neighbourhood policing, detective work, and economic crime, with starting salaries between £31,164 and £42,210. Requirements: a 2:2 degree in any discipline. Motivation, ownership, and cultural awareness are essential.
Key takeaway: Employers value soft skills like communication, leadership, and problem-solving over specific degrees. Graduates should keep an open mind and consider roles outside their initial field.
