A team of researchers from Northumbria University is celebrating after their educational resource, Play, Be, C, was named a finalist at the prestigious Bett Awards in the Early Years Product or Service category. This online teaching tool is designed for educators working with children aged three to five years old and aims to enhance engagement with STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics).
About Play, Be, C
Developed by the outreach group NUSTEM, this resource challenges traditional gender roles in career choices and introduces young learners to various STEM careers. Play, Be, C consists of ten themed units, each focusing on different professions such as pharmacist, glaciologist, and marine engineer. Activities are designed to inspire discussion and broaden aspirations among children from an early age.
The online teaching resource, Play, Be, C, is aimed at educators of children aged between three and five years old.
Recognition and Impact
The resource has already won the STEM Initiative Award at the 2024 Educate North Awards, showcasing its impact in the education sector. Professor Carol Davenport, Director of NUSTEM, expressed delight at the project’s recognition at the Bett Awards, highlighting its importance in the UK education industry.
Professor Graham Wynn, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Education) at Northumbria University, emphasized the value of experiential learning in education, noting that resources like Play, Be, C help young learners explore future career possibilities.

Organized in association with the British Educational Suppliers Association (BESA), the Bett Awards celebrate outstanding educational technology initiatives. The 2025 awards took place on January 22 in London, showcasing organizations recognized for their innovation and impact in the field.
