Transforming Law Education: A Mock Courtroom Built from Recycled Materials

A Unique Learning Experience for Law Students

A new mock courtroom at Richard Huish College in Taunton is providing law students with a unique opportunity to experience what life is like in a Crown court. This innovative project was made possible through a recycling initiative that repurposed genuine courtroom furniture.

Collaboration and Support

The facilities management team from Equans, who service courts across England and Wales, played a vital role in this project by refurbishing and installing the donated furniture from HM Courts and Tribunals Service. The items included essential components such as a judicial dais, jury seating, a defendant dock, and desks for both prosecution and defense teams.

Sustainable Efforts

The furniture, which would have otherwise ended up in a landfill due to its poor condition, was restored through a dedicated effort of approximately 280 volunteer hours from Equans. The transformation of the classroom included painting and fitting wood paneling, all completed in just five days.

Enhancing Career Opportunities

Richard Huish College's ambition is to provide students with enhanced opportunities in the field of law. The mock courtroom aims to simulate a real courtroom environment, allowing students to gain practical legal education.

Community Involvement

The unveiling of this facility was attended by staff from HMCTS, Equans, teachers, and students, marking a significant milestone in the collaboration between education and legal services.

Tom Spalding, Deputy Director of Facilities Management and Technical Services at HMCTS, stated, > "This initiative demonstrated HMCTS’ commitment to sustainability while providing law students with an authentic environment for their practical legal education."

Equans Sector Director Jacob Snellings emphasized their commitment to social responsibility, noting that the mock courtroom aims to attract young individuals to explore various career paths within HMCTS.
