Artificial Intelligence is set to transform how UK citizens manage life admin and career decisions, with the government announcing trials for AI "agents" aimed at simplifying everything from job searches to moving house. These trials, potentially starting by 2027, are designed to save time and modernize public services.
Unlike traditional chatbots, these AI helpers will perform tasks autonomously, such as booking appointments, filling out forms, and handling multiple government services simultaneously. For instance, relocating could trigger your AI agent to update your driving license, register you with a new GP, and ensure you're on the correct electoral roll—all without lifting a finger.
The initial phase will concentrate on employment and skills, offering young people personalized career guidance, apprenticeship opportunities, and job advice. UK Technology Secretary Peter Kyle emphasized the transformative potential of this initiative:
"We can entirely rethink and reshape how public services help people through crucial life moments using the power of emerging AI technology. Using agentic AI to its full potential, we could provide a level of service to citizens across the country that was previously unimaginable."
This project falls under the AI Opportunities Action Plan, adopting a "scan, pilot, scale" strategy for innovation. Collaborations with private AI companies are underway, with prototypes expected in the next 6–12 months. While optional, this service promises to reduce administrative burdens for citizens and alleviate pressure on government staff.
Success could position the UK as the first country globally to deploy AI agents for national public services, marking a significant leap forward in governmental efficiency and citizen support.
